Just don’t call it a traffic circle

  • WITF’s Scott LaMar focused on roundabouts during the first segment of the latest Smart Talk episode. PennDOT engineer Jeffrey Bucher, the state’s roundabout coordinator, shared stats on traffic safety and congestion relief tied to 19 such configurations across the state. The info backs up what many — myself included — have long held true about the benefits of roundabouts vs. traditional four-way intersections.

  • During the discussion, Scott shared an anecdote about surviving a single-lane traffic circle (not exactly the same as the modern roundabouts referenced above) on his way to Ocean City, NJ . The Somers Point Circle, as it was known, happens to be near my hometown. The Circle has since been eliminated — a process that involved an epic eminent domain battle between the state of N.J. and the owners of The Pearl Restaurant. Today, the intersection’s legacy lives on the marquees of a nearby liquor store and bar/restaurant (the circle’s removal actually prompted the latter to change its name).

  • Now, if only Pa. could address left lane driving (mis)behavior: Our state is one one of very few where driving laws are ambiguous on this point, according to a rundown from MIT.

Best of the rest

  • Former Lebanon County Commissioner and City Councilman Randy Hoffman has joined the race to succeed former state Sen. Mike Folmer. Folmer resigned a few weeks ago after being charged in relation to child pornography. WITF’s Craig Rhodes has the full story here.

  • Waterborne bacteria killed three babies and infected five others at Geisinger’s hospital in Danville, Montour County. Now, hospital and state health officials are trying to figure out how that happened and diverting expectant mothers to other facilities in the meantime, according to this Sentinel post.

  • The Philadelphia City Council is slated to discuss a college debt tax credit this morning. The proposal would give recent grads as much as $1,500 in annual tax credits for as long as five years (maxing out at $7,500). The Philadelphia Inquirer has more details in this story.

  • A federal judge on Monday dismissed President Trump’s attempt to block the release of his tax returns to New York City prosecutors, but a federal appeals court stepped in to delay that release. The fight over the president’s tax returns is being waged on multiple fronts. This New York Times story mentions many of the ongoing legal fights.

  • So what is impeachment and how does it work? Franklin & Marshall’s . Terry Madonna and Michael L. Young devote the latest edition of their Politically Uncorrected newsletter to the topic. They list five myths of impeachment, including their final one: “Nothing seems more misunderstood about impeachment than the basis for it.”
