One Philadelphia police officer who had contracted COVID-19 has died, Mayor Jim Kenney said Monday.
Lt. Jimmy Walker, a member of the department’s Traffic Division, died on Sunday, Kenney said in a social media post.
“We don’t know where and how Lt. Walker contracted the virus,” Kenney said. “This is a heartbreaking reminder that COVID-19 affects people throughout our community—especially those on the front lines.”
Kenney said the city will do all they can to protect those serving the people of the city.
“Our condolences are with Lt. Walker’s loved ones and the Philadelphia Police during this tragic time,” Kenney said.
As of Monday, there are 3,611 cases and 28 deaths from coronavirus in Philadelphia County.
